Job Description:
Participate with optical physicists, electronic & mechanical engineers, and software engineers/analysts within a team effort involved in modeling, design, development, test, and data analysis tasks for laser & fiber-optic instrumentation, lidar transmitters & receivers, and mass spectrometry. There is a strong emphasis on solving practical problems in the generation, collection, and interpretation of aerosol lidar data and in the application of mass spectrometers to identification of chemical and biological samples.  Work focuses on bridging optics, physical sciences, and algorithms to engineering tasks needed to make sensors that are reliable and effective. Lab work and field tests will be conducted on prototype sensors indoor and outdoor at SESI and at government facilities in the Washington, DC and Baltimore area.
 
Hourly Rate/Salary:
$16 per hour
 
Start/End Date:
ASAP after UMD classes end spring term 2009/when classes begin for fall term 2009
 
Preferred Major:
Physics
 
G.P.A. Requirement:
3.0+
 
Student Qualifications/Skills:
Lots of interest and some knowledge in optics, electro-optics, lasers, fiber-optics, statistics, and the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data sets. Lab and field work interest is a must. Ability to operate common electronic test equipment is a plus. Computer skills with Matlab and C++ are a plus. Interest and skills in engineering processes are a plus. Student should be located within the Columbia, MD commuting area.
