Maryland 20th nationwide with the best
environments for black collegians.
The University of Maryland was honored
in early 2000 by the Quality Education
for Minorities Network as a national
leader in awarding doctoral degrees
in mathematics, computer science, the
physical sciences and engineering.

Universities: Elites and Challengers in the Postwar
Era, placed Maryland 18th nationally in faculty
research productivity.

Programs of Excellence, a new report from
the University of Maryland Graduate Program
Review Committee:
"The College of
Computer, Mathematical and Physical Sciences
is the premier college in the university,
based on the excellence of its graduate programs,
including three programs (Computer Science,
Mathematics and Physics) ranked among the
top 10 public universities nationwide."

and programs in the College of Computer, Mathematical
and Physical Sciences have been recognized for their
excellence in many national rankings. Here is some
of the latest evidence.
- Astronomy
- The Department
was ranked 19th by the National Research Council
in 1994, the last available NRC survey.
- Atmospheric & Oceanic
Science
- The Department was ranked 5th in Ph.D.
granting institutions in the US by the Gorman
Report
- The Institute for Scientific Information
(ISI) ranked the Department 20th in citations
for papers on Air pollution and air quality
and 17th in citations for papers on Tropical
Storms. These are rankings of all institutions
world-wide.
- Chemical
Physics
- The Program was ranked third among
degree granting programs in Chemical Physics
based on the average number of citations per
publication. The period covered was 1999 to
2003. The ranking was done by the Research
Services Group of Thomson Scientific.
- Computer
Science
- The US News & World
Report 2006 ranked the Department 13th, and
6th among public universities; and the following
specific research areas were ranked:
- Artificial intelligence—9th
- Computer systems—16th
- Programming languages—15th
- Theory
of computing—22nd
- Geology
- The Department is ranked 8th among all
US universities in geosciences, 11th in
the world
- Geochemistry is ranked 10th
nationally, 3rd among public universities.
