Diversity in CMPS

Tamara Singleton (tsinglet@umd.edu)
Tamara Singleton is a full-time graduate student in the CMPS graduate program: Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing (AMSC). In addition, she works as Grant Coordinator in the CMPS Dean’s Office responsible for the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Program (LSAMP). In this position she coordinates the undergraduate research program which encourages students to participate in undergraduate research opportunities and pursue advance degrees in the STEM fields. She is on the management team for the CMPS partnership with the Clark School of Engineering providing support and guidance for other NSF funded programs such as the Summer Bridge Program for Scientists and Engineers. She has been instrumental in the development and delivery of various programs for pre-college students. Tamara originates from New Orleans, LA where she received her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Dillard University and her Master’s degree in Mathematics from Tulane University. She encourages students to fully participate in opportunities within their area of study to develop themselves as students and contribute to their communities.

There is a well-established urgent need to increase the participation of women and under-represented minorities in computer science, mathematics, and the physical sciences. CMPS is committed to working toward that goal: we provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere in which all of our students and faculty share together in the thrill of scientific discovery. Graduate schools, private sector employers and university departments across the country are making it a priority to increase the representation of women and minorities in these fields.

Since CMPS students graduate with a degree that ranks among the very best in the country, our graduates have a wealth of opportunities in front of them. In this context, our college is particularly emphatic about the need to build diversity in our undergraduate and graduate programs: we offer a great experience, a degree whose reputation ranks with Michigan, Texas and UCLA, and offers unlimited post-graduation possibilities. Our partnership with the A. James Clark School in the LSAMP program and our partnership with science magnet school in Prince George’s County are two efforts toward that goal; others are described on this page.
