Summer Program in Research and Learning (SPIRAL)
This six-week summer program, funded by the National Science
Foundation and the National Security Agency, enables sophomore
and junior students to grasp a deeper understanding of the
professional opportunities in the mathematical sciences. Participants
accomplish this goal through the reinforcement of academic
knowledge, participation in research with University of Maryland
scientists, preparation for graduate school and professional
life and the establishment of a peer and advisor network.
SPIRAL offers:
- An opportunity to earn three credits applicable towards
a college degree.
- Extensive orientation to the University of Maryland campus
and its support services.
- Exposure to different aspects of careers in computer,
earth, mathematical and physical sciences.
- A series of presentations and discussions by high-level
scientists from University of Maryland faculty and alumnae,
and employees from government labs and corporations such
as NASA, NIST, NIH, and Lockheed Martin.
- Field trips to museums and highly interactive tours of
labs and corporations.
- The opportunity to be paired and interact with a faculty
and/or graduate mentor to assist with research and refine
career paths.
