Clare Boothe Luce Professorship in Computer Science
CMPS received a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation under
its Clare Boothe Luce Program to hire a new female faculty
member. With the grant, CMPS funded a new position in the
computer science department, currently ranked 12th in the
nation by U.S. News & World Report. Vibha Sazawal will
begin January 2006 as Assistant Professor and Clare Boothe
Luce Professor in computer science. The Clark School of Engineering
also received a professorship, which it will use to support
a faculty position in electrical and computer engineering.
The award recognizes the University of Maryland's longstanding
commitment to increasing the number of female faculty members
and building an inclusive and equitable community.
The
American Association for University Women Recognizes CMPS
STAND as the 2003 Progress in Equity Award Winner
STAND was recognized as the AAUW
2003 Progress in Equity Award Winner on Tuesday, November
11, 2003. Since 1987, the American
Association of University (AAUW) Legal Advocacy Fund has
recognized more than 35 programs throughout the United States
for their progressive and innovative advancements on behalf
of women, faculty, staff and/or students. A $10,000 stipend
accompanies the award. Funds will be used to fund discussion
panels, scholarships, and graduate associates to implement
programs among other endeavors.
GANN Fellowships Support students in Physics
The U.S. Department of Education awarded the physics department
seven fellowships under the federal Graduate
Assistantships in the Areas of National Need (GANN) program.
Three African American men and four women have been selected
for the three-year fellowships that provide doctoral students
with living stipends, full tuition and fees, medical insurance,
plus travel and computer allowances.
