Undergraduate Programs
Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation
(LSAMP) Program
The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP)
Program is designed to assist students in developing the skills
and learning the strategies that will guarantee their success
in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
(STEM). CMPS and The Center for Minorities in Science and
Engineering of the Clark School of Engineering at the University
of Maryland College Park share this grant with the University
of Maryland Baltimore County and the University of Maryland
Eastern Shore. As a result of this funding, students who attend
the University of Maryland College Park benefit from a unique
combination of academic, financial, and social support programs.
- Summer Bridge Program for Scientists and Engineers

Each year a group of 30 students from CMPS and the Clark
School of Engineering are invited to begin their freshman
year with a six-week residential summer program that offers
them an opportunity to get a head start in their Math, English
and Computer Science courses. During the academic year students
receive mandatory advising and participate in special activities
designed to increase retention, promote academic excellence
and expose them to internship and undergraduate research
opportunities.
- LSAMP Undergraduate Research Program
The Undergraduate Research Program
encourages students to conduct research with CMPS and
Clark School of Engineering faculty and prepares students
to pursue advance degrees in science, technology, engineering,
and mathematical (STEM) fields. The program offers:
- Student
stipends of $2,500.00 for the academic year
- Faculty-student
partnership to conduct cutting-edge research in the STEM
fields
- CMPS 299R, a research course designed to assist
students with their research experiences and graduate
school preparation
- Research preparation tools such as
scientific writing and computer programming workshops
- Graduate
school preparation workshops
- Graduate school visits to
surrounding universities
- A supportive learning community
of students, faculty and staff to support student research
interests and projects
- Access to available summer research
opportunities and professional conferences
- Outreach opportunities
to encourage pre-college and undergraduate students to
pursue careers and studies in STEM fields
MentorNet
This E-Mentoring Network for Women in Engineering and Science
enables students to join a virtual community of professionals
who have an interest in encouraging women. By utilizing MentorNet,
students are able to connect with professionals in the field
of science and engineering; gain valuable information and
resources from mentors and partner corporations, foundations,
professional societies, government labs, agencies and colleges
and universities.
