Advising
Department
of Astronomy Academic Advising Guidelines
Students Served
The Department of Astronomy is responsible
for advising its majors, and serving undergraduate
students in general by providing information
about astronomy courses, the astronomy
citation and requirements for the major.
The Undergraduate Advisor provides these
services to students.
Advising Interactions
During a pre-registration advising session,
the Undergraduate Advisor updates the students
file and assists the student in planning
for the next semester.
During any advising interaction,
discussions may include degree requirements,
academic opportunities, student academic
and personal difficulties, long-range career
plans, campus resources, research prospects,
and summer programs.
During any advising interaction,
not only should the stated concern be heard,
but also the Undergraduate Advisor should
address the total academic needs of the student.
Advising Structure
The Undergraduate Advisor, possibly with
some assistance, advises all astronomy
majors. The Undergraduate Advisor, along
with the Associate Chair, is responsible
for all aspects of advising astronomy majors.
Advising Procedures
Before registering each semester, an astronomy
major is required to make a pre-registration
appointment with the Undergraduate Advisor.
The Undergraduate Advisor reviews the students
progress prior to the pre-registration
appointment and updates the students
file. Paper records kept in the students
file include student transcripts, the major
progress check sheet, and the CORE requirements
sheet.
During the year, the Undergraduate
Advisor provides advising services or consultations
as requested by students. Students may schedule
an advising appointment or drop by during
the Undergraduate Advisors posted office
hours.
