Advising

Department of Computer Science Academic Advising Guidelines

Students Served
The Computer Science department, along with the CMPS Undergraduate Education Office (using a “two-tiered system”), is responsible for advising undergraduate Computer Science students and prospective majors. In addition the Computer Science department provides advising support for advisors in several other departments, which have Computer Science courses required for their majors (Computer Engineering, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences for example).

Advising Structure
The Computer Science department has a “two-tiered” advising system, sharing some of the responsibilities with the CMPS Undergraduate Education Office. Within the Computer Science department there are approximately 5 non tenure-track faculty who perform both teaching and advising related duties every semester.

The CMPS Undergraduate Education Office advises prospective students, with the assistance of the Computer Science department regarding major requirements.

The CMPS Undergraduate Education Office advises 1st year Computer Science majors until they complete the 100-level Computer Science requirements.

The Computer Science department advises all Computer Science majors who have completed the 100-level Computer Science sequence (i.e. 2nd year and beyond students).

Advising Procedures
Computer Science majors:
Every Fall and Spring semester all Computer Science majors have mandatory advising. In addition all Computer Science courses (except Computer Science 102) have BPO restrictions. 1st year students are generally required to make an appointment each semester for advising, as well as they have certain times of the year where walk-in advising is available in the CMPS Deans Office. 2nd year and beyond students have walk-in advising available Mon-Fri from 12-4pm all semester long and generally no appointments are needed.

Advisors in other units that require Computer Science course(s) of their students:
The Computer Science department communicates with advisors in other units directly via email and in person when requested. In particular close ties are kept with the Computer Engineering department, as well as the other CMPS departments.

All other students:
Since almost all Computer Science courses have BPO restrictions, non-majors (outside of CMPS and Comp. Eng.) planning to take Computer Science courses are also served by the Computer Science advisors.

Expected Outcomes
Undergraduate students taking Computer Science courses shall receive appropriate and timely advice regarding Computer Science courses and requirements.

Computer Science majors shall receive appropriate and timely guidance regarding degree requirements, academic opportunities, and course planning.
