Guidelines
Students Served
The Undergraduate Education Office
is responsible for oversight and support
of current and prospective majors in Astronomy,
Computer Science, ENSP: Earth Surface Processes,
Geology, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and
Physics. The Undergraduate Education Office
using a two-tiered system is
responsible for direct advising of Computer
Science majors who have not yet completed
the 100-level courses. The Undergraduate
Education Office communicates with the Electrical
and Computer Engineering Department in support
of the advising of Computer Engineering students.
Advising Structure
The Undergraduate Education Office
undergraduate advising staff includes the
Associate Dean, Director, Associate Director
and approximately three Graduate Assistants.
The CMPS departments have primary responsibility
for advising current and prospective majors.
The Undergraduate Education Office oversees
and supports departmental advising.
Advising Procedures
Before registering, Computer Science majors
in 100-level courses make appointments
with the Director, Associate Director or
Graduate Advisors.
Paper records are maintained on all meetings
and communications with students.
The Director, Associate Director and Graduate
Advisors are available, outside of early
registration period, for walk-in appointments.
The Director, Associate
Director and Associate Dean are available
by appointment, particularly for Deans
Exceptions.
Academic success activities for students
placed on Academic Probation include: an
individual written success plan; EDCP 108B:
Concepts and Skills: Learning Strategies;
and Contract REAP, an individual guidance
program.
Information is provided online through the
CMPS undergraduate website and the email
answer line cmpsque@deans.umd.edu.
All College and departmental scholarship,
internship, and research information is provided
on the website.
Expected Outcomes
For Orientation and all advising sessions,
students shall receive appropriate information
on programs and opportunities, general
education requirements, CMPS and campus
advising procedures and policies, academic
expectations, progress in the major, prerequisites
and information on appropriate resources.
Students shall also receive information
on CMPS and departmental scholarships, research,
career and internship information, and guidance
on internship placement.
Students shall receive timely notice of
special opportunities and approaching deadlines;
degree audits at 90 credits and on request.
Students shall receive
consideration of special permissions and
Deans Exceptions.
Students shall receive on-the-spot information
through walk-in advising, the CMPS undergraduate
website, and the email answer line cmpsque@deans.umd.edu.
